Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in London
OCD is much more than being tidy or particular. It can mean being caught in a cycle of unwanted, distressing thoughts and the urges or rituals you feel you have to carry out to make the anxiety go away. It can be exhausting and isolating, especially when the thoughts feel too frightening or embarrassing to say out loud. Therapy offers a confidential, non-judgemental space to talk about them.
I am a BACP-accredited psychotherapist offering therapy in central London and online, working with adults affected by OCD and intrusive thoughts.
What OCD can look like
OCD usually involves obsessions, which are intrusive thoughts, images or urges that cause anxiety, and compulsions, which are things you do, physically or in your head, to try to ease that anxiety. Common themes include:
-
Fears about contamination, germs or illness
-
Checking doors, appliances or whether something bad has happened
-
Intrusive thoughts about harming someone, often the people you care about most
-
Unwanted sexual or religious thoughts
-
Doubts about your sexuality or your relationship
-
Needing things to feel "just right", symmetrical or in order
-
Mental rituals such as counting, reviewing or seeking reassurance
Having these thoughts does not mean you want them or will act on them. The distress they cause is usually a sign of how much they go against who you are.
How therapy can help
We start by understanding your OCD: what triggers it, the patterns it follows, and how it affects your life and relationships. Naming thoughts you may never have shared can bring real relief, and helps loosen the shame that often comes with OCD.
My approach is integrative. Alongside exploring the anxiety and beliefs that keep the cycle going, we can work on practical ways to respond differently to intrusive thoughts and reduce the hold of compulsions. If a more specialist approach would suit you better, such as CBT with exposure and response prevention, I can talk this through with you.
